Fort Washita Historic Site, located in Durant, Oklahoma, was established in 1842 as the southwestern-most military post in the United States. Its primary objective was to ensure peace for the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations within their new territories as per treaty obligations.
Throughout its history, Fort Washita faced numerous external threats, including attacks by Republic of Texas militia, raids by Plains tribes, and conflicts with traders and trappers. The fort served as a United States military post until the onset of the Civil War in 1861, after which it was occupied by Confederate forces until 1865.
