Union Cemetery in Steubenville, OH is the largest cemetery in Jefferson County and is listed on the National Register. It is a beautiful destination to visit, particularly during the spring and fall seasons. However, the cemetery faces challenges as many early burials and re-interments from former pioneer cemeteries remain unrecorded, and some were placed in mass burial locations. Additionally, there is a significant paupers section with numerous unrecorded, unknown, or unmarked graves.
Steeped in history, Union Cemetery invites the community to submit information about the lives lived in Steubenville. The cemetery offers interment records upon request, with the first page being complimentary and subsequent pages available for a nominal fee. Notably, the cemetery was home to a Civil War cannon that was used by the 500-man Steubenville Militia during skirmishes with Morgan's Raiders in 1863. The cannon has since been restored by Eric Hilty, who rebuilt its carriage after discovering the barrel lying in the maintenance garage.
