Located in Akron, Ohio, the Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza commemorates the historic visit of abolitionist Sojourner Truth to the Ohio Women’s Convention in 1851. This landmark spotlights Truth’s powerful advocacy for marginalized voices, including women and Black individuals, through her iconic speech.
The Plaza, designed by landscape artist Dion Harris, pays homage to Truth’s Ghanaian heritage with a floral motif. At its heart stands a striking bronze sculpture of Sojourner Truth crafted by renowned Akron artist Woodrow Nash. The site officially opened on the 173rd anniversary of Truth’s impactful address.
Having evolved from a two-decade-long project spearheaded by University of Akron professor Faye Hersh Dambrot, the Plaza is a collaborative effort involving local artists, designers, and community partners. Its creation was revitalized by the Summit Suffrage Centennial Committee, ensuring the lasting legacy of Sojourner Truth in Akron’s history.
