Patrick Vaccaro, MD - Division of Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery represents a longitudinal relationship with the patient to treat a variety of diseases that can impact both the length and quality of their life. I value that relationship and the ability to provide surgical, minimally invasive and medical options to give the patient the best possible outcome. I specialize in aortic diseases and peripheral artery disease. At the heart of my approach is the patient-doctor relationship. I strive to make sure information is clearly presented and understood and that we work as a team to develop a strategy that incorporates elements that matter most to the patien n one of my more resent research endeavors, I've worked to develop novel, noninvasive diagnostic methods using near infra-red light. We have been awarded a provisional patent for this technology. My unique background in biomedical engineering has allowed me to perform computer based modeling and bring those data to the bedside. I'm also interested in computer modeling of aortic disease as well as outcomes-based research examining ways to improve care for vascular patient orking with the Division of Vascular Diseases and Surgery at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center has been a special opportunity. We foster a sense of trust with the patient and address their unique conditions in a way that works best for them. That dedication is unique to this group and represents the excellence that the rest of the Buckeye community embodie n my free time, I enjoy running, biking and spending time with my family.

I've had many family members who have serious (and often life-threatening) illnesses, so I have been on the "receiving end" of the healthcare system. I hope I can treat patients how I prefer to be treated. It's very rewarding to meet an extremely nervous patient for the first time and by the end of the visit, to see them relax and tell you that they trust yo chose vascular surgery during my general surgery residency because the patients are often very complicated with multiple medical problems. I enjoy helping sort these problems out and caring for "really sick" patients. Vascular patients are, in general, very thankful. They don't expect to be "cured," but they want to be comfortable and live a relatively normal life. In my free time, I enjoy cycling. I have ridden in Pelotonia every year since it began. I have a close set of friends who all ride together and keep pushing me to be better. I enjoy riding for the health benefits and miss it during Ohio winters - I get too bored to do indoor cycling.

I believe that in vascular surgery, the best results are achieved through a team approach. We work with the patient's primary healthcare providers and our surgeons. Together, we can manage peripheral vascular disease both medically, as well as through various noninvasive procedures and surgeries. I specialize in peripheral vascular disease. This includes atherosclerosis (or hardening of the arteries in the body), aneurysms and venous disease. These are often manifestations of systemic illness. Recognizing and treating these diseases can help improve a patient's quality of life dramatically. I am passionate about developing new ways to improve the care of my patients and better treat vascular diseas hat I enjoy most about working at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is that we have many resources available to us. Because of this, we can offer a more comprehensive care plan for our patients.
