The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, also known as ODNR, is governed by the state of Ohio. Founded in 1949, the department owns and manages more than 590,000 acres of land, including several state parks, forests, nature preserves and wildlife areas. It has jurisdiction over 120,000 acres of inland water bodies. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources licenses hunting, fishing and watercraft activities. The department issues permits for mineral extraction, dam safety monitoring and water resources management purposes. In addition, it offers assistance with the mapping of various geologic structures and mineral resources statewide. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources protects threatened and endangered natural resources, such as rare plants and animals.
