Smittys Floors was started in July 1997 out of the back of a 1985 e150 van by Mike Smith while attempting college at hocking tech and living in Athens, Ohio selling carpet to students for dorm rooms at Ohio University. By October 1997, Smitty was getting requests to do new carpet in new homes in Jefferson county Ohio come December mike decided to move back home and coach his old high school wrestling team and start a flooring business on historic north fourth street in downtown Steubenville Ohio. In February 1998, Smitty Floors, officially opened to the public at 141 North Fourth Street, Steubenville, and did business there for about 2 yrs before moving around the corner to a bigger location at 438 Market (old Kreskys Building).
