Adams Rural Electric Cooperative was formed in 1940 by a group of Adams County farmers with the help of federal funding program offered by the Rural Electrification Administration. The first lines were constructed in 1940 around Marble Furnace. Adams REC serves more than 8,000 members. The system consists of nearly 1,300 miles of distribution line that reaches into parts of four other counties that includes Brown, Highland, Pike and Scioto. Adams REC is one of the many rural electric cooperatives in the United States. Adams REC is headquartered in West Union, Ohio.
