My father, John W. Metcalf, was a small-town OB-GYN in Ohio. Seeing his commitment to medicine is what originally inspired me to explore the field. When I discovered orthopedics, I knew that I had found the perfect specialty for me. Being an orthopedic trauma surgeon gives me regular opportunities to help my patients during some of the hardest moments of their lives and to allow them to see a future beyond their injury. \n From the beginning of my career, I have been devoted not only to continuously learning about the specialty and growing as an orthopedic surgeon, but also to making the path better for those who follow. I was the first female Chair of the Board of Specialty Societies of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, serving on their Board of Directors. I have served on multiple BOD, including my subspecialty-the Orthopedic Trauma Association. I was responsible for developing the current fellowship match process for orthopedics, laying the groundwork for young surgeons to get their start in their chosen subspecialty. I also served as president of the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society, a group that gave me the inaugural She for She Award in 2022. Currently, I am chair of the Association of Women's Surgeons (AWS) Publications Committee and serving on the AWS Executive Council. I am devoted to seeking out ways to grow the field and support other surgeons as we all work together to advance the field. \n I very much attribute my success to the support of my family; my late father and my mother and siblings were my earliest supporters, while my husband, Jeff, and daughter, Annalise, have provided incredible encouragement as well. Annalise also gave me an opportunity to see orthopedic surgery from a different angle; a college soccer player, Annalise was sidelined by ACL injury. I was happy to witness and help see her through ACL reconstruction, her recovery and her return to Division 1 soccer.
