The reimagined Sullenberger Aviation Museum reopened on June 1, 2024. The new 35,000 square foot main gallery houses two thematic areas: 1) Aviation Society is about the people and companies that make up the aerospace industry in the Carolinas and features oral histories from people who have shaped its business and culture in recent years. 2) Innovation Nation features iconic aircraft that represent significant advances in technology, design, and safetyn starting with Orville and Wilbur Wright. Hands-on activities encourage visitors and students to write their own innovation stories into the history of aviation.
The centerpiece of the main gallery is the Airbus 320 "Miracle on the Hudson" aircraft that was successfully landed on New York's Hudson River by Captain C.B. "Sully" Sullenberger. About half of the 155 passengers and crew on board were coming home to the Charlotte Region on that fateful day.
