As early as high school, nurse practitioner Shar Watkins knew she was destined for a career in the medical field. Watkins worked as a labor and delivery RN, helping women through every stage of childbirth. She later became a nurse practitioner to help patients during all stages of life, not just when they were in the hospital. Watkins believes a large part of that excellent care is educating her patients and wants to empower young girls and women to be active participants in their health care, and to protect and take care of their bodies. Watkins understands the concerns facing busy mothers, as a mother of four herself. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family reading James Patterson books and loves spoken word poetry.

From an early age, I was fascinated by science and how the human body worked, and I've always been fulfilled by helping others. So, although no one in my family works in healthcare, I was naturally drawn to the field of medicine. \n Throughout my academic journey, I became particularly interested in the biology of cancer, which guided me toward a focus on oncology. In medicine, and especially in cancer care, things are changing at breakneck speed. It's imperative that clinicians stay up to date on this ever-changing field. And fortunately, that's easy to do because I find it captivating. \n I primarily treat patients with genitourinary (meaning, related to the genital and urinary organs) cancers, including cancer of the kidney, bladder and prostate, as well as patients with cutaneous malignancies, such as melanoma. My other clinical interests include immunotherapy because of its incredible potential in fighting cancer. \n Cancer care is complex and often difficult to navigate. One thing I pride myself on is an ability to connect and communicate with my patients. I work hard to ensure that they - and their loved ones - understand their disease and treatment options. My patients and I develop a personalized plan together that is aligned to their needs and goals. \n I grew up in Charlotte but left for college, medical school and further medical training. I'm thrilled to be back home and closer to family. The Queen City has changed so much since I was young, and I delight in finding unique restaurants, green spaces and community programs to participate in. \n In my free time, I love being outdoors and staying active; my favorite hobbies include exploring nature with my two rescue dogs, running and playing tennis.

Medicine, and oncology specifically, have been a calling for me from a young age. My family has no medical professionals, yet I knew from childhood that a career in medicine was in my future. I have always had a particular interest in the science of oncology and the incredible advancements in cancer treatments that have occurred in the last century. Today, I am a hematology and oncology specialist focusing on the treatment and management of breast and lung cancers. \n My colleagues and I believe in a team approach to care. That is why I serve on thoracic and breast tumor site councils and the committee for cancer at Novant Health. This is an opportunity for us to come together with our colleagues to discuss cases, explore treatment options and develop care plans for our patients as a team. \n What I love most about oncology is the relationships I develop with my patients and their families. Cancer can often be a long journey, and I consider it an honor to help patients navigate through these challenging times and beyond. \n I am originally from Columbia, South Carolina, and did most of my training in my home state at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. After completing my medical training, my husband and I relocated to Charlotte to be close to family. I am happily married to my husband, and we have two boys who are the light of our lives. In my personal time, I enjoy exploring nature with my children, traveling and reading, as well as daily exercise.
