Purchase Knob in Waynesville, NC is home to the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center, a 535-acre parcel within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This center, established in 2001, supports research and education by providing office and laboratory space, classrooms, and housing for visiting scientists, students, and teachers.
Donated by Kathryn McNeil and Voit Gilmore, the Purchase Knob property includes the iconic 5,086-foot elevation Purchase Knob, a historic cabin, and two buildings. Since its inception, the center has welcomed an average of 5,000 participants annually, making it a vital hub for scientific exploration and knowledge dissemination in the park.
