Helping people prevent illness is one of the best parts of my job. I also like to help patients who are sick – and their families – navigate their illness as well as a complex clinical care environment. Internal medicine gives me the opportunity to learn a lot about a very broad topic and to share that knowledge. Internal medicine doctors get to take care of people with illnesses affecting all organ systems. We see the “big picture,” which gives us a unique perspective in the medical field. People deserve to know the risks and benefits of a particular treatment in order to make an informed decision. It’s my job to explain those clearly and provide guidance, while leaving the decision up to the patient. I meet people where they are and respect whatever decision is right for them. Besides seeing patients in clinic and the hospital, a large part of my job is teaching internal medicine residents and UNC medical students. As Novant Health’s internal medicine residency program director, I oversee residents who provide patient care. It is immensely rewarding work, and I’m proud to have received several teaching awards from medical students and residents. I have two smart, beautiful daughters who are both in high school. I enjoy spending time with my family, which includes our two dogs, Charlie and Mailey
