The Lt. Samuel I. Parker Historical Marker in Monroe, NC, commemorates one of the two North Carolinians awarded the Medal of Honor for valor during World War I. Samuel I. Parker, a member of the First Infantry Division, displayed extraordinary gallantry on July 18, 1918, when he advanced into machine gun fire to eliminate a threat, earning him this prestigious recognition.
In addition to the Medal of Honor, Parker received the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and Purple Heart for his military service. After the war, he had a successful career in the textile industry and contributed to military training during World War II before retiring to Concord, where he passed away in 1975.
