Kevin Johnson, MD

In the rural area where I grew up, family physicians took care of the whole community and offered a broad scope of care. Their example inspired me to pursue a career as a family physician. I believe in a collaborative approach to healthcare and in meeting people where they are. I consider myself a partner to my patients in their journey to achieve optimal health. The way I see it, the keys to a successful primary care physician and patient relationship are trust and availability. I work hard to provide access to care and ensure that systems are in place to allow my patients get the care they deserve when they need it. For 16 years, I taught family medicine at the graduate level, and for nine of those years, I served as the founding program director of the family medicine residency program in Lawrenceville, Georgia. I was honored to be named "Outstanding Primary Care Physician" by the Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce in 2014 and to win the Program Director Silver Award from the Association of Family Medicine Residency Doctors (AFMRD) in 2021. I have certificates of added qualification from the American Board of Family Medicine in hospice and palliative medicine and healthcare administration, leadership and management. I'm a former national board member and treasurer of the Association of Family Medicine Program Directors, a former board member of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians, a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. I have published articles, book chapters, and presented nationally and internationally on topics in family medicine ranging from communication skills to clinical improvement and from electronic health records to Parkinson's disease. In addition, I have served as a medical research poster competition judge at the state and national levels. I enjoy exploring the science of medicine without losing focus on what matters most, which is the care of the patient. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening and tending our small homestead. I have led medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic for many years and served on the state medical assistance team for disaster response.
