Established in 1867 as Biddle Memorial Institute for freedmen by the Presbyterian Church, Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC has a rich history dating back over a century. Alexander and Stephen Mattoon, the first president.

This marker is on a tall pole outside the guard's shack that is at the entrance to the university. There is no parking here but I was able to briefly stop to read the marker and the guard didn't...
