I am privileged to be the lead physician of integrative medicine at Novant Health. Integrative medicine combines the best of conventional medicine with a wide array of supportive, complementary and holistic measures. We use the wisdom and power of the world's ancient traditions, combined with current research-supported treatments, to optimally treat and support the whole person. It is not alternative medicine; it's inclusive medicine. \n Although our clinic's primary focus is on cancer patients, we treat any patient looking to improve their health, delay the effects of aging and/or manage chronic conditions. \n When I was 16, I watched a NOVA documentary on Public Broadcasting Service about cancer and knew immediately what I wanted to do with my life. I took a hiatus from medical school to work in cancer research and completed a doctorate in cancer molecular biology, which showed me how laboratory research can be translated into patient care. \n Before joining Novant Health, I spent over two decades in emergency medicine, which gave me a broad perspective on acute, interventional medicine and inspired a strong desire to tend to the whole person rather than an ad hoc approach to healing. \n I also spent a decade training in and practicing acupuncture and herbal, longevity and integrative medicine. As a result, my approach to healthcare is not reactive and problem-oriented, but proactive and holistic. \n During a consultation with me, patients can expect a comprehensive review of their health that includes a thorough medical history, discussion of current health challenges and exploration of goals for healing and well-being. I make personalized, patient-centered, actionable recommendations to empower patients to achieve optimal health and wellness. Body, mind, spirit and community are all part of every patient's care plan. \n Our clinic offers a range of resources including nutritional interventions, consultations with registered dietitians, exercise programs, acupuncture, herbal medicines, supplements, therapeutic massage, hypnotherapy, aromatherapy, music therapy, meditation classes, yoga, breathing exercises, psychosocial support and more. \n My wife and I - along with our four cats - moved from Sedona, Arizona, to Charlotte in 2022 and immediately fell in love with the area. My hobbies and my clinical interests are closely related and include exercise, meditation and studying all things related to the human condition. In addition to teaching mindfulness meditation, I have written books on meditation and founded a nonprofit that combines meditation with community service and overseas medical missions. \n Meditation has given me a deep connection to and appreciation of life and its mysteries. It has also made me happier, kinder and more relaxed.

Every day, patients, physicians and researchers are advancing their understanding of the biology of cancer, right down to the molecules that make up individual cancer cells. This includes learning more about how and why tumors react differently to different treatments. That is why I emphasize the need to tailor treatment to the individual based on his or her unique medical history and needs. In my years of practice, I've found that what works for one patient may not work for others, and I enjoy making those important distinctions and individual plans. \n My decisions about patient care have been aided, in part, by my participation in clinical research. What I learn through research yields practical insights into the latest and most effective therapies for all stages of breast cancer. This work has included serving as an investigator in the Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium, which allows patients in rural communities across five states to participate in clinical trials without having to travel hundreds of miles. \n I also serve on a committee that seeks to identify best practices for preventing and treating breast cancer by developing and conducting national clinical trials. This work helps me keep informed about the most advanced treatments, so I can help patients whether they are enrolled in clinical trials or not. It was the rapid pace of discovery that first drew me to specialize in treating cancer. \n I am a third-generation physician. After growing up in Charlotte, I always dreamed of returning home to treat patients. Today, I am married with two daughters. I enjoy traveling, cooking and spending time at the beach in North Carolina.
