Howard W. Newell Jr., MD, FACP

I have wanted to care for patients for as long as I can remember and found a great avenue to do so by becoming a Physician Assistant. My philosophy of care is to provide patients with comprehensive and compassionate care the way I would like to be treated. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family at the beach, cooking and reading.

I grew up in eastern North Carolina where my father was a physician and role model for me. I started practicing medicine in Raleigh in 1987. In my practice of general internal medicine, I especially enjoy partnering with patients to manage chronic medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Preventive medicine is a priority for me, including recommending health maintenance screening measures. I am married and have two adult children. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, being an avid UNC and Carolina Hurricanes fan, and listening to blues and rock music.

Growing up my parents owned a fitness center so health and wellness have been priorities in my life as long as I can remember. As a young child I used our fitness center as a playground, but by my high school years I was helping to train new clients. I loved being able to contribute to improving their physical health. Studying science in college and then going to medical school felt very natural to me. I chose Osteopathic Medicine because I believe in focusing on a patients mind, physical body and spirit collectively, rather than just one disease process at a time. I focus on prevention by gaining a deeper understanding of your lifestyle and environment rather than just treating your symptoms.Outside of work, my husband and I love to play outdoors with our two young children. I like to entertain friends at our home. I like to jog outside, and I love to shop.
