The Historic Burgaw Train Depot, dating back to circa 1850, is the oldest surviving train depot in North Carolina and serves as a vital landmark on the NC Civil War Trails and the US National Civil War Trail. This significant site played a crucial role during the Civil War as a communications hub and was an official prisoner exchange location.

After the Civil War, the depot became a key stop on the 161-mile rail line connecting Wilmington to Raleigh. Today, the restored and renovated depot showcases its historical importance and is home to a portion of the North Carolina Transportation Museum.
