Severe flooding of the Neuse River, and damage to downstream communities in the early 1900's was cause enough for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to study the area for a future dam. After a hurricane in 1945 wrecked havoc on downstream communities, U.S. Congress decided to take action. Construction of the Dam at Falls Lake was officially authorized by congress through the Flood Control Act of 1965. By 1978, construction began and was finished in 1981.
