History

Realtor Mack Sawyer bought this lot in November 1895 from the Anchoree Lodge Odd Fellows and had a 2-story building erected. He sold the property to the Virgiliant Lodge #3993 of the Grand Order of Odd Fellows, one of Elizabeth City's earliest black fraternal lodges. The lodge remained here until 1910 when the property was purchased by Dr. Lemuel S. Blades (1866-1954). Blades had the lodge moved about ten feet away from the corner and renovated it for residential rental purposes. Among the stylish elements added to the house were elaborate Victorian
