Created by the North Carolina legislature in 1881, The Durham County Sheriff s Office provides law enforcement services, promotes public safety and protects the rights and property of the residents of Durham County, N.C. The administrative division is responsible for accreditation, property and evidence, the budget, the quartermaster and the information systems of the sheriff s office. The patrol division is responsible for answering calls for service, patrolling assigned areas, investigating motor vehicle collisions, enforcing traffic and criminal statutes, and completing written reports and other documents as required. The operations division s responsibilities include communications, juvenile services, records, adult services, reserve officer program and the sheriff s community oriented policing efforts. The special services division includes the K-9 unit, the emergency response team, the search and rescue team and the negotiations response team. The Durham County Sheriff s Office is headquartered in Durham, N.C.
