As an orthopedic surgeon, I focus exclusively on replacing hips and knees in adults who have exhausted other options for reducing pain and restoring mobility. I have performed hundreds of hip and knee replacements since completing a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery in 2003. \n Thanks to advances in technology and surgical techniques, these types of surgeries involve much less blood loss, pain and recovery time compared to 20 years ago. Nevertheless, I work with a care team to carefully screen my patients before recommending hip or knee replacement surgery. For example, if you are a smoker, are obese, have a history of chronic narcotics use or other risk factors, we may develop a plan to improve your health before surgery to minimize the potential for complications. \n While a hip or knee replacement may not get you back to running marathons, it can reduce or eliminate pain that makes golfing, hiking, gardening and other favorite activities and daily tasks an ordeal. My goal is to restore your quality of life by restoring your mobility. \n My father was a physician. Seeing the joy that helping people brought him inspired me to go into medicine. I was drawn to orthopedics because I enjoy problem solving, the physical nature of the work and the rapid pace of innovation. \n Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Natalie, and my sons, Jack and Alex. We love traveling and exercising together. In my personal time, I enjoy gaming and have a passion for snow skiing.

My subspecialty is foot and ankle reconstruction. I use both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques such as arthroscopy to help athletes and other active people recover from orthopedic injuries and conditions. These conditions include bunions, hammertoes, arthritis of the foot and ankle, ankle sprains, Achilles tendinitis and ruptures, ankle replacement, and the correction of complex lower extremity deformity, among others. \n I was drawn to medicine at age 18, when I became an emergency medical technician. I chose a career in orthopedic surgery after my rotation as a third-year medical student at Georgetown University. I realized at that point how enjoyable it is to work with motivated and active patients of all ages who have a goal of returning to or maintaining an active lifestyle. \n I take a patient-centered and goal-oriented approach to treating orthopedic conditions. The process begins with a thorough assessment of not only the medical problem, but also the individual's goals and ambitions. Factoring these elements into patient care allows me to develop an individualized approach that helps to relieve pain and let patients pursue their specific athletic goals and hobbies. \n Since residency, this approach has also guided my research, which has examined a range of topics, including the safe return to driving after lower extremity orthopedic surgery and minimally invasive surgery of the foot and ankle, among other topics. \n I live in Charlotte with my wife and two young daughters. As a family, we enjoy spending time in the outdoors, golfing, grilling and exercising.
