History

Archie & Judi Kelly met at Fredrick College in Portsmouth, VA and have been married for more than 50 years. In 1965, three years after Archie & Judi were married, they opened a ladies dress store in Sandford, NC and called it 'DAK's'. The initials for Duncan Archibald Kelly. After they opened their third store they had to change the name DAK's, which already had a copyright by the famous DAKS clothing line from London, England, to D.A. Kelly's. During the next 35 years they grew into a very well known chain of ladies clothing stores with a total of 36 stores in every major mall in North Carolina. They had over 300 employees and Archie was named NC Retailer of the year in 1987. D.A. Kelly's home office, warehouse, distribution center and retail store were all located in Archie & Judi's home town of Carthage, N.C. They also manufactured there own line of sportswear and dresses with the D.A. Kelly's private label in them. They closed all the stores in 1997. For the past 18 years A
