Cytogenetics Laboratory processes more than 3,000 specimens annually that include peripheral blood, bone marrow, tumor and tissue biopsies. The laboratory provides a variety of fluorescence in situ hybridization assays to detect constitutional and acquired chromosome abnormalities. In addition, it conducts research activities and uses traditional and molecular cytogenetic techniques to identify and characterize rearrangements. The laboratory offers training services for a range of medical techniques, such as chromosome banding and analysis. Cytogenetics Laboratory accepts and evaluates the ThinPrep smears, as well as provides consulting solutions. It is a part of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, which is governed by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
