Coweeta Long-Term Ecological Research Program
The Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, established in 1934, is a premier research facility located in Otto, North Carolina, dedicated to the study of ecological dynamics in the southern Appalachian region. It has a rich history of collaboration with various universities and research programs, focusing on forest hydrology, ecology, and the impacts of natural disturbances and human activities on temperate montane deciduous forests.
Over the years, the laboratory has contributed significantly to understanding biodiversity and ecosystem processes, particularly through its involvement in the Coweeta Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program, which began in 1980. Although NSF funding for the Coweeta LTER program was discontinued in 2016, collaborative ecosystem research continues at the site in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, reflecting the laboratory's ongoing commitment to ecological research and community engagement.
