City Market, nestled in the heart of downtown Raleigh, stands as a prominent tourist attraction known for its blend of open-air shopping and dining experiences along picturesque cobblestone streets. Boasting a diverse array of specialty shops and local eateries, this historic site caters to both visitors and residents alike.

Established on October 1, 1914, City Market has a rich history steeped in community gatherings and commerce. Initially bustling with farmers from across the region, the market evolved over the years to adapt to changing consumer needs, eventually undergoing a rejuvenation process in the 1980s to preserve its architectural heritage.

Under the stewardship of Joe Hakan and his son Michael in the 1990s, City Market saw a revival with upgraded shops and illuminated rooftops, breathing new life into the beloved landmark. Today, City Market continues to offer a unique blend of food, entertainment, and history, making it an ideal destination for family outings or evenings spent with friends.

Everything has closed down. From the pictures it looked really cute. But when we got there everything was boarded up and nothing was there.

This area could be one of the best spots in the city, however every time we are there (mostly for City Market Sushi) half of the storefronts are closed or unitized. What a bummer.
