Caprice C. Greenberg, MD, MPH

I am a medical oncologist with a clinical focus on caring for patients with sarcomas. These are rare and heterogeneous cancers that can affect patients of all ages, including adolescents and young adults. I strive to always listen closely to my patients and address their concerns, while collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and bringing the highest-quality, most cutting-edge medical science to achieve the best possible outcomes for my patients. Equity is a core value for me – at a public institution like the University of North Carolina, it is our job and our privilege to provide the highest quality cancer care to all patients, regardless of their background or circumstances. My goal is to always be in partnership with my patients, navigating the complexities of a cancer journey together, side by side. I am also a health services researcher, and my work focuses on how to optimize care delivery systems to improve the quality of cancer care for all patients, especially those who have been traditionally underserved. This involves understanding the gaps and barriers within our current delivery systems, followed by the development and testing of interventions to improve those systems. Outside of work, I love spending time with my family (two young kids), playing music, reading, hiking and playing basketball.

My journey into healthcare was ignited by a genuine love for caring for patients when they need it most. My philosophy revolves around holistic care. I place a strong emphasis on active listening, attentively understanding patient needs and desires, and building meaningful relationships that foster trust and collaboration. With each interaction, my goal is to empower you to take charge of your health and well-being. When I am not in the hospital, I like to attend concerts, try new restaurants, spend quality time with my loved ones, and dedicate time to self-care activities that rejuvenate my spirit.

The majority of my clinical practice is seeing patients with glioblastoma. These patients are sick and require prompt diagnosis and treatment. Due to the limited options for these patients, they also require cutting-edge treatments. I believe in personalized medicine for glioblastoma where treatments should depend not only on the patient’s age and performance status, but also the molecular and genetic profile of their tumor. For me, the top priority is always patient care, to treat every patient like they were my family. These patients and their families need compassion and a treating physician who can be a friend and guide. I want my patients to think of me first whenever they have any medical, social or financial issue that arises from their diagnosis. I also believe that patients need choices and autonomy to choose the treatment that is best for them. I am there not only to offer treatments that are available at my center, but also to talk about treatments that may be available across the country or globe.
