The Aurora Fossil Museum, founded in 1976, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) science education resource center located in Aurora, North Carolina. Their mission is to educate the public about paleontology in an engaging manner while emphasizing the natural and cultural history of Eastern North Carolina.
The museum houses a wide variety of Miocene and Pliocene marine fossils, with displays showcasing specimens collected from the neighboring Nutrien Phosphate Mine. Visitors can also dig for their own fossils in the Pits of the Pungo located within the Fossil Park across the street from the main museum.

We enjoyed the museum and fossil digging. We found several shark teeth, lots of corral and welk shells. I would suggest bringing your own shovel for digging. The museum had kid sized shovels.
