North Brother Island
Open
North Brother Island, located in New York City's East River, was once home to the Riverside Hospital for quarantinable diseases but is now uninhabited. The island, along with its counterpart South Brother Island, was purchased by the federal government in 2007 and designated as sanctuaries for water birds.
Managed by the New York City Parks Department, North Brother Island offers about 20 acres of land while South Brother Island boasts approximately 6 acres. Public access is prohibited, but researchers and journalists can visit with permission and under the escort of a NYC Parks staff member.
