Xinhua Zhu, MD, PhD, is a medical oncologist and hematologist at Monter Cancer Center, where he specializes in treating genitourinary cancer, including cancer of the prostate, kidney, bladder and testicles. He focuses on compassionate, evidence-based care, rooted in his research background. "My research helps me think outside the box when creating treatment plans," says Dr. Zhu, "and enables me to explain to patients the mechanisms behind the treatments I'm using." His research interests include finding new treatment targets for generating hormone resistance in prostate cancer and metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, exploring biomarkers in bladder cancer to guide decisions about chemotherapy, exploring the mechanisms for kidney cancer metastasis, and investigating the effectiveness of immunotherapy for genitourinary cancers.Dr. Zhu earned his medical degree at Suzhou Medical College and practiced internal medicine in China. He obtained his PhD in cancer study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, then moved to the United States for postdoctoral research training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, an internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He attended NYU School of Medicine for fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology. In 2013, he joined Northwell Health, where he regularly meets with a multidisciplinary group of pathologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, geneticists and the Molecular Tumor Board to create treatment plans.As an associate professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, he twice received the Medical Oncology/Hematology Fellowship Program Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Zhu is also a phase 1 cancer research program director at Monter Cancer Center. He is assistant investigator at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the Principal Investigator for the Northwell Health NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) For Dr. Zhu, being able to pursue both scientific investigation and patient care is the best part of his work. "I can take research from the bench to the bedside, providing people with the best possible treatments," he says.

Ruthee-Lu Bayer, MD

Ruthee-Lu Bayer, MD, is the system head for stem cell transplant/cellular therapy at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, where she also directs the stem cell transplant/cellular therapy lab. She is also the clinical director of the Don Monti Adult Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant (BMT) Program at North Shore University Hospital. Under her direction, the BMT program received the prestigious Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) accreditation. Dr. Bayer was drawn to medicine because she was born with a condition that affected one of her legs, which is significantly shorter than the other. “I had 20 corrective surgeries as a child to help establish a more functional limb,” she says. “That is part of my reasoning behind pursuing a career in medicine.” Dr. Bayer received her medical degree from New York Medical College and did her residency and fellowship with Northwell Health. “At that point, I really found great fulfilment in cellular therapy and stem cell transplantation,” she says. Dr. Bayer has led the Northwell Health stem cell transplant/cellular therapy program since 2001. “It’s a highly specialized, complex process, and we’re a small team of highly competent, committed people that have continued to succeed,” she says. “The team members function seamlessly, and every day make one plus one equal three. We perform magic tricks, and we get the job done.” An associate professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Dr. Bayer has published extensively and speaks internationally about stem cell transplants and cellular therapy. She is a full member of both the Cancer Prevention Committee and Respiratory Committee of Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. This is a national, NCI-sponsored, cooperative group that develops, fund and conducts clinical trials at many academic and community oncology centers across the country. In her position on these committees, she collaborates with clinical research experts across the country to establish standards-of-care, oversees the conduct of existing clinical trials, develops innovative and impactful hypotheses, and formulate future clinical trials. Dr. Seetharamu is the institutional principal investigator on over 10 clinical trials, has co-authored over 50 publications and book chapters and is a sought after speaker at various regional, national and international events related to Head and Neck and Thoracic cancer.
