The Vestal Police Department works to preserve peace and deter crime through the enforcement of local, state and federal laws. The department performs duties related to crime prevention, sexual offenses, drug abuse, juvenile crime and homicide. It operates a detective division that conducts criminal investigations and processes warrants and evidences. The Vestal Police Department operates a communication center that responds to calls for police, fire and medical emergency services. The department is comprised of more than 40 sworn officers, civilian dispatchers and records clerks. It also employs school resource and juvenile officers. The Vestal Police Department supports countywide juvenile intervention programs designed to assist youths and families at risk. It supports the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, which helps children avoid involvement with drugs, gangs and violence. The department is located in Vestal, New York.

Founded in 1835, the Penn Yan Fire Department offers a range of fire protection and suppression services. It maintains operations in Yates, Ontario, Schuyler and Steuben counties in New York. The department responds to more than 300 calls every year. It works in partnership with Hydrant Hose Company. The Penn Yan Fire Department operates a fire engine under the Pierce brand.
