Wawapek Preserve, located in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, is a stunning 32-acre nature preserve that was once under threat of development. With over 60 percent of the preserve covered in mature hardwood forest, it serves as a vital protector of air quality and erosion control. Visitors can explore the preserve's woodland trails, enjoy the formal garden with a historic yew round and specimen trees, and catch glimpses of wildlife such as foxes and state-protected Box Turtles. Acquired and protected in 2015 through a partnership with various organizations and private donors, Wawapek Preserve stands as a testament to the importance of environmental conservation.

Within the preserve, visitors can also find a restored historic greenhouse, originally built in the early 1900s as part of the de Forest Family's Wawapek Farm. Thanks to a grant from the Gerry Charitable Trust, the greenhouse has been revitalized, with broken glass replaced, wooden planting beds repaired, and the structure given a fresh coat of paint. Additionally, a pollinator garden project has enhanced the entrance of the preserve, featuring a split rail fence and beautiful daffodils. These improvements, made possible by the support of members and friends, have further enhanced the beauty and significance of Wawapek Preserve.
