Born to French parents, Vincent Duron moved to New York during his early childhood. He left New York to obtain his undergraduate degree at Stanford University, after which he spent the next few years teaching 4th and 6th grade in Queens and Moscow. He returned to New York to obtain his medical degree at the University of Rochester where he graduated with Distinction in Community Service in 2007. He completed his residency in general surgery in 2012 at Brown University Medical School/Rhode Island Hospital where he received multiple research and teaching awards, including the Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. He then returned to the West Coast to complete a fellowship in pediatric surgical critical care at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (2013) and then to Texas to complete a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School (2015). Throughout his years of training, Dr. Duron performed clinical research leading to the publication of multiple articles in pediatric trauma and global health issues. His interests include general pediatric surgery, in particular neonatal anomalies, minimal access surgery, and the critical care treatment of pediatric surgical and trauma patients, as well as access to surgical care in developing countries. He has been involved in multiple global health projects in Russia, Cameroon, Malawi, Kenya, and most recently is actively developing a trauma registry in Iquitos, Peru. At Columbia/NYP, Dr. Duron serves as Co-Director of Fetal Therapy, Surgical Director of the Pediatric ICU, and Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery. In his clinical work, he places an emphasis on developing protocols and evidence-driven measures to treat our sickest surgical patients. In particular he is interested in the study of fluid resuscitation and respiratory failure in the pediatric surgical and trauma patient.

My research project, “A double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial assessing the efficacy of metformin for hepatic fat in adolescents and young adults with polycystic ovary syndrome” has the primary goal of exploring the use of novel and noninvasive testing and a pilot double-blind placebo-controlled trial of metformin with the intention of identifying and potentially treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in adolescents and young adults with PCOS. My research is unique in that it uses minimally invasive body composition methodology, which makes it particularly attractive for use in adolescents and young adults. My overall clinical research goal is early identification and treatment of metabolic and body composition abnormalities associated with PCOS and to prevent lifelong morbidity associated with this disorder in a young population

Dr. Kanwal M. Farooqi is a specialist in the use of advanced imaging techniques to provide the best care for patients with congenital heart disease. She completed pediatric and pediatric cardiology training at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and was named the Rachel Cooper Foundation fellow during her time at CHAM. Dr. Farooqi went on to complete an advanced imaging fellowship at Kravis Children’s Hospital, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Farooqi’s research focuses on the use of 3D printed and digital cardiac models to improve care for patients with congenital heart disease. She was granted the Glorney Raisbeck Fellowship Award by the New York Academy of Medicine to identify the optimal cardiac MRI sequences in creating 3D models. Prior to joining Columbia, Dr. Farooqi was a full time faculty member at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School for two years and led the pediatric cardiology service for the University Hospital in Newark. At Columbia, Dr. Farooqi also researches the use of advanced imaging technologies, including 3D printing and virtual reality, for education of patients, families and trainees. Dr. Farooqi recently collaborated with other leaders in the field to publish a book entitled “Rapid Prototyping in Cardiac Disease: 3D Printing the Heart.” She has organized a multicenter study assessing the utility of 3D printed models for preoperative planning of VAD placement in patients with congenital heart disease and heart failure. Dr. Farooqi has authored multiple manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and has been invited to speak about her research at numerous national and international conferences. An expert in her field of advanced imaging, she was recruited to help build the 3D printing program at CUMC.
