The Mental Health Department is a part of Tompkins County in New York and provides assessment, counseling, and treatment and crisis services to adults, children and families with mental health impairments on a sliding scale basis. It conducts court-ordered evaluations for family courts in Tompkins and adjacent counties and evaluates and monitors mental health services for jail inmates. The department supports a mental health program that offers case management services to adults with severe and persistent mental illness. The Mental Health Department also conducts a forensic program that is the formal link between the mental health and the criminal justice systems and provides assessment, evaluation and crisis intervention services to the inmates of the Tompkins County Public Safety Building.

It offers casework management, guardianship, advocacy and legal solutions for the victims of sexual abuse and adults with mental impairments. The Chenango County Department of Social Services provides various employment services, such as assessment, readiness training, career counseling, and job search and placement. The department operates a facility, Preston Manor, which offers housekeeping, laundry, personal care assistance and transportation solutions. It additionally supports the Home Energy Assistance Program, which offers financial assistance to low-income households. The department is governed by Chenango County in New York.
