The Town of Potsdam Historical Marker is part of a broader initiative by the New York Historical Association, which began in 1923 to commemorate significant historical sites across the state. This program has evolved over the years, with a focus on educational purposes and the preservation of New York's rich history through the erection of various markers.

Initially funded through small appropriations, the program gained momentum in the 1960s, leading to the establishment of the State Historic Trust. This agency continues to oversee the identification and recognition of historic sites, ensuring that the educational potential of these locations is effectively utilized and appreciated by the public.
