HistoryThe Learnatory concept began in 1977 as a homework help and tutoring program in Los Angeles, California. In 1978, it opened in Chicago, Illinois and operated there as well as Naperville, Illinois until 2014 when Founder and Executive Director, Debra Brown-Thompson moved to Brooklyn, New York. The program was piloted at a small church in East New York, Brooklyn in the summer, 2015 when it began a Saturday program the following Fall at St. Francis College in downtown Brooklyn. Simultaneously, The Learnatory began delivering classes to various schools and organizations. The following summer, The Learnatory established its summer program at St. Joseph's College where access was granted to a state-of-the-art computer lab and additional space. It currently holds summer camps at that location and can be found throughout Brooklyn at schools and weekend programs during the school year.SpecialtiesFor over 40 years, The Learnatory has offered world-class supplemental education to children. Today it is the premier STEAM education center in New York City cultivating the interests, talents, and skills of today's youth for 21st college and careers. We advocate, advance, and transform education through innovation and powerful learning experiences. The Learnatory delivers powerful STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) supplemental educational experiences through in-school classes, after-school programs, home-school instruction, weekend programs, and summer camps. Our amazing STEAM Summer Camp is located on the beautiful campus of St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, New York with offerings ranging from Game Design, Coding, Spa Science, and Robotics to Aerospace Engineering, Virtual Reality, Digital Production, and Pre-Med. It is open to rising 2nd through 10th graders who explore a wide range of STEAM topics through hands-on activities.
