Shinnecock Indian Nation Tribe
The Shinnecock Indian Nation, one of the oldest self-governing tribes in New York State, gained federal recognition as the 565th tribe in 2010. Their ancestral lands in and around the Town of Southampton have been occupied since time immemorial. The Shinnecock people, whose name translates to "people of the stony shore" in Algonquian, primarily oversee tribal territory at Shinnecock Neck and Westwoods, totaling around 1,000 acres.
With over 1,500 enrolled members, the Nation plays a crucial role in preserving its cultural heritage and traditions. Approximately half of the Shinnecock population resides on the Reservation at Shinnecock Neck. The tribe is actively engaged in various initiatives and events, such as Project Warmth and the Palm Tree Festival, fostering community engagement and sharing their rich history with the public.
