SATO Sakura Gallery
History
Sato Sakura Gallery specializes in the exhibition, acquisition, preservation, and commercial evaluation/sales of contemporary Japanese paintings -Nihonga- from painters born after the start of the Showa-era (1926). The first Sato Sakura was established in October 2006 in Koriyama city, Fukushima prefecture. Since the opening of our second premier location in Tokyo, Sato Sakura as hosted an annual national competition -the 'Ookasho' awards- to recognize rising Nihonga Japanese painting masters. Winners of this prestigious accolade are chosen by a panel of experts and top-ranking post-war masters, after-which the winning paintings are exhibited in our museum alongside some of Japan's greatest cultural treasures. Our final expansion, Sato Sakura Gallery New York, opened its doors in September 2017. At Sato Sakura Gallery New York, we provide a venue for people from around the world to appreciate and experience the allure and diversity of contemporary Nihonga Japanese painting.
