HistoryThe Sackets Harbor Visitor Center is located in Village Founder Augustus Sacket's former home. Mr. Sacket, a lawyer and real estate developer from Long Island, purchased a tract of wilderness land in northern New York in 1801, and he built his Palladian-style home here in 1802. The Village, and even Mr. Sacket's home, played a vital role in the War of 1812. The house served a variety of purposes over the years, and it was acquired by the Village in 1980 and later renovated with the assistance of New York State.
