The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation oversees the preservation and promotion of Roosevelt Island's community and landmarks, including the historic Lighthouse. Built in 1872 by inmates of the local penitentiary, this fifty-foot high structure was designed by prominent architect James Renwick Jr. to aid navigation through the treacherous East River channel.

Today, the Lighthouse is situated within Lighthouse Park, a popular destination for fishing and barbecuing. The park and its surrounding sites, including the Blackwell House and Smallpox Hospital, reflect the rich history and cultural significance of Roosevelt Island.
