Helen Keller Services for the Blind was founded in 1893 as the Industrial Home for the Blind. The organization aims at helping individuals of all ages who are visually impaired and have other disabilities to develop independence. Its rehabilitation services include training in safe travel and daily living skills, screening for eye disorders that can lead to permanent visual impairment. The center offers various programs for children, adults and seniors, such as camp Helen Keller, pre-vocational training for teens, Braille and large-print library, children's Saturday program, day treatment program, low vision services, assistive technology for jobs, orientation and mobility, and skills assessment, job training and placement. Its children s learning center offers Early Intervention Program, Preschool Program and Parent and Early Education Resource Center. Headquartered in Brooklyn, the agency has additional rehabilitation sites in Hempstead, Huntington and Long Island, N.Y. It also operates the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults in Sands Point, N.Y.
