Roger Härtl, M.D., is the Hansen-MacDonald Professor of Neurological Surgery and Director of Spinal Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, as well as Neurosurgical Director, Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is also the founder and director of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian at the Weill Cornell Medicine Center for Comprehensive Spine Care as well as Weill Cornell Medicine's Global Neurosurgery Initiative in Tanzania (for which he was named AANS Humanitarian of the Year for 2022). He also serves as the official neurosurgeon for the New York Giants Football Team. In 1994 Dr. Härtl came to the Weill Cornell Medical College as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Surgery and the Brain Trauma Foundation to pursue research in traumatic brain and spinal cord injury. He completed another fellowship in neurocritical care at the Charite Hospital of the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, followed by a surgical internship and residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He completed his neurosurgery residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, after which he pursued specialized training in complex spine surgery at the Barrow's Neurological Institute in Phoenix under Dr. Volker Sonntag. In 2004 Dr. Härtl returned to re-join the Department of Neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.RESEARCHDr. Härtl's scientific interest focuses on clinical and basic science research surrounding innovative and less invasive surgical and biological treatment strategies for degenerative diseases of the spine. Together with the Biomedical Engineering Department at Cornell he is working on tissue-engineering techniques for the repair and regeneration of degenerated spinal discs, the most common cause of back and neck pain. Dr. Härtl has lectured and published extensively on the surgical treatment of spinal disorders, and neurotrauma. Dr. Mandigo earned his medical doctorate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his Neurological Surgery Internship, Residency and Chief Residency at the Neurological Institute of New York, Columbia University. Dr. Mandigo's practice is devoted to spinal deformity, degenerative spine disease, intervertebral disc disease, spinal column tumors and spinal cord tumors. Dr. Mandigo uses minimally invasive techniques for spinal surgery including the use of narrow tube retractor systems for cervical and lumbar microdiscectomy and spinal fusion. He also has expertise in artificial disc replacement surgery in the cervical spine. He has particular expertise evaluating and, if required, treating disorders of spinal alignment such as scoliosis or sagittal imbalance. Dr. Dean Chou is the Bennett M. Stein Professor of Neurosurgery. He is the Chief of the Spine Division and Vice Chair of Department of Neurosurgery at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Chou has many years of experience andexpertise in scoliosis, spinal deformity, spinal tumors, and degenerative conditions of the spine. He haspioneered many minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat these complexconditions, and is also an expert in traditional open surgery. Whenpossible, he uses the least-invasive treatment techniques,providing an individualized, thoughtful approach to every patient. Dr. Chou attended medicalschool at the University of California, San Francisco, completed his residencyin Neurosurgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and undertook a fellowship incomplex spinal surgery at The Barrow Neurological Institute under one of thelegendary pioneers of spine surgery, Dr. Volker Sonntag. He is board certified by the American Boardof Neurological Surgery. Prior toColumbia, he was on faculty at the University of California of San Francisco,rising to the rank of full Professor of Neurosurgery and Orthopedics, and eventually the Associate Director of the UCSF Neurospine Center. He is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and hasbeen elected by his peers for 10 consecutive years to the “BestDoctors in America” list, according to Best Doctors, Inc. Dr. Chou has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications in a wide variety of neurosurgery and spinejournals. He is a two-time recipient of the HaroldRosegay Resident Teaching Award and has been awarded the Alumni AchievementAward from The Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosurgery. He has served as abstract reviewer andfaculty member for such organizations as the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS),the North American Spine Society (NASS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons(CNS), the AANS, the LSRS, the Global Spine Congress, and the InternationalMeeting for Advanced Spinal Techniques (IMAST).
