The Community Foundation of Elmira Corning and the Finger Lakes Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the region through philanthropic efforts. Founded in 1955, Capabilities is a nonprofit corporation that assists people with employments barriers to obtain their optimum vocational goals. The idea came from the concern of community members that saw persons with disabilities not being employed due to impairments related to a disability. Services include general and electrical assembly; janitorial services; supported services with job coaching; print shop; upholstery; and commercial packaging. It provides services to persons from Chemung, Tioga and Steuben counties in New York and Tioga and Bradford counties in Pennsylvania. EOP's Head Start program strives to build real and lasting foundations that support children and families toward gaining interdependence. This program offers social, physical, cognitive, and language development growth that provides positive and healthy experiences for three- to five-year-old children within the community. Children learn as they play, developing essential skills for future social and educational success. Medical, dental, and mental health services are also provided to ensure that all of the children are able to maintain a sound body and mind for developmental success.
