Norman Latov, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Susan Gauthier is an academic neurologist with a specialty in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic neurological disease causing variable levels of disability; this may include difficulties with ambulation, vision, balance, and cognition. Although there are FDA approved therapies for the treatment of MS, many patients only partially respond, therefore active research is ongoing in this field to provide novel treatment strategies to patients. In addition to specializing in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, she is an active clinical investigator in the field. Dr. Gauthier is committed to providing the highest quality of care to her patients and aspires to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from this disease. Dr. Susan Gauthier received her DO degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing her medical internship at St. Elizabeth'?s Hospital in Boston, Dr. Gauthier finished her neurology residency at the Boston University Medical Center where she served as Chief Resident. Dr. Gauthier was a recipient of a three year Multiple Sclerosis Society Clinical Trial Training Fellowship in which she completed at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and received a MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. She is currently a member of the clinical staff at the Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Care and Research Center at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where she is Clinical Attending and Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience.

Timothy Vartanian, MD, PhD, a leading authority on neural regeneration has been named as the Director of the Judith Jaffe Multiple Sclerosis Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is also appointed to the faculty of the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Vartanian received his medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Chicago. His internship, residency, and two research fellowships were at the prestigious Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. Previously, he was chief of the Division of Demyelinating Diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a member of the faculty of Harvard Medical School.Dr. Vartanian has led research teams that have made groundbreaking discoveries in central nervous system remyelination, novel mechanisms of axonal degeneration and regeneration, and mechanisms of immune mediated injury to myelin and axons in multiple sclerosis. His research interests center on regeneration of the myelin internode in multiple sclerosis, preventing axonal and neuronal injury, and defining the complicated interactions between the immune and nervous systems.His work has been published in top peer reviewed journals including the Journal of Cell Biology, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, the Journal of Neuroscience, Science, Nature, and the New England Journal of Medicine.His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Norman Latov, MD, PhD is Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience, and Director of the Peripheral Neuropathy Clinical and Research Center at Weill Cornell Medical College.Dr. Latov graduated from Columbia College in 1970, received the MD, PhD degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1975, served as Medical Intern at Boston City Hospital, and completed his residency in Neurology at the Neurological Institute of the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in 1979, where he also served as Chief Resident. Following a research fellowship in Immunology, he joined the faculty of Columbia University where in 1994 he was appointed Professor of Neurology.Dr. Latov joined the department of Neurology and Neuroscience of the Weill Cornell Medical College in 2001, where he heads the Peripheral Neuropathy Clinical and Research Center. His clinical and laboratory research interests are in Peripheral Neuropathy and Neuroimmunology, focusing on the diagnosis and and treatment of inflammatory neuropathies. His laboratory is credited with the discovery of anti-MAG and GM1 ganglioside antibodies that are implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune neuropathies, and for developing blood tests that are currently used to diagnose these conditions. His current research focuses on the use of monoclonal anti-CD204 macrophage receptor antibodies for treatment of neuroimmune and inflammatory diseases. He lectures widely, and has over 200 publications, including research articles, reviews, editorials, chapters and books.Dr. Latov was a founding Board member, Medical and Research Director, and member of the National Advisory Council of the Neuropathy Association, which subsequently merged with the Foundation for Neuropathy. His book "Peripheral Neuropathy: When the Numbness, Weakness and Pain Won't Stop" (American Academy of Neurology) was written with the aim of demystifying the illness for patients and their families and friends. Dr. Latov has been selected as one of America's or New York Metro Area's Top Doctors, by Castle Connolly, annually since 1998.
