Joyce Au, MD, FACS, is a breast surgeon at Northwell Health. She offers specialized care for high-risk cases and performs a wide range of breast procedures, including lumpectomy and nipple-sparing mastectomy for breast cancer. "I've always been fascinated with medicine, science and the human body," says Dr. Au, recalling her childhood in Hong Kong and her admiration for her grandfather, who practiced traditional Chinese medicine. Dr. Au completed her general surgery residency at SUNY Downstate. She went on to do a fellowship in advanced training in breast and melanoma surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center. She joined Northwell Health in 2016 as a breast surgeon at Northwell Health Physician Partners Breast Surgery at Huntington. Working with a multidisciplinary team-including radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, plastic surgeons and genetic counselors-Dr. Au makes sure every patient is comfortable and fully informed. "I know it's a tough time, so it is important to be compassionate and kind," she says. "I make sure they understand every part of their care." Patients certainly agree-Dr. Au is a two-time recipient of Northwell's Patients' Choice Award, a feedback-based recognition.Dr. Au is also an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. She's authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, and is currently contributing to a clinical study on 3D breast models for breast cancer patients. She is also working with Northwell partner Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on breast cancer research."The best part of my job is seeing people continue living their lives, doing what they love," says Dr. Au. "Patients have sent me their sisters, daughters and moms for care-that is the biggest compliment you could ever get."

Renu Hausen, MD, is a board-certified radiation oncologist with privileges at Huntington Hospital. She has more than 25 years of experience treating an entire spectrum of cancerous tumors. She specializes in highly precise Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery for brain tumors; stereotactic body radiation therapy for tumors of the spine, breast, lung, prostate, and other parts of the body; and precision brachytherapy for skin cancer and uterine cancer. Dr. Hausen’s goal is to provide compassionate, comprehensive care. “I like to spend a good deal of time with patients and their families so that I can understand their hopes and goals for treatment,” she says. Another priority is to advance patient care through clinical research. Dr. Hausen is actively involved in studies for rectal cancer, head and neck cancer, and prostate cancer. She was instrumental in designing a radiation treatment de-escalation protocol for breast cancer for Northwell Health. “My father was a pediatrician, so I knew I wanted to be a doctor from a young age,” she says. While earning her medical degree at the University of Texas Medical School, Dr. Hausen discovered that radiation oncology appealed to her because the specialty combines math, physics, and technology with patient care. She went on to complete her residency in radiation oncology at NYU School of Medicine. At Northwell, Dr. Hausen works with a team of professionals, including pathologists, diagnostic radiologists, medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, nurses, radiation technicians, and integrative health specialists to devise personalized treatment plans. Dr. Hausen is also certified in cancer nutrition and can help patients make dietary and other lifestyle modifications as part of their care plan. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Hausen is assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. She is also a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology and is involved with the American Cancer Society as well as other local cancer charities. For Dr. Hausen, the best part of her job is being able to provide comfort to people who are facing a challenging diagnosis. “There’s a tremendous amount of fear associated with cancer, and it’s gratifying to alleviate patients’ concerns, whether this is through achieving remission or improving their quality of life through treatment.”
