In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Now headquartered in New York City, United Nations has six principal organs, including the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice and Secretariat. It has more than 30 affiliated organizations, known together as the UN system. The organization works to promote respect for human rights, protect the environment, fight disease and reduce poverty. The United Nations leads the international campaigns against drug trafficking and terrorism. Throughout the world, the UN and its agencies assist refugees, set up programs to clear landmines, help expand food production and lead the fight against AIDS. Additionally, it has various departments, including departments of peace-keeping organizations, public information, safety and security, management, political affairs and internal oversight services.
