History

Lewis Howard Latimer was an African American inventor, a son of fugitive slaves, self-taught poet and painter. The Lewis H. Latimer House is a modest Queen Anne-style residence constructed between 1887-1889 and is now a NYC landmark and museum. Lewis Howard Latimer lived in the house from 1903 until his death in 1928. Threatened with demolition, the house was moved from Holly Avenue to its present location in 1988.

Specialties

The Lewis H. Latimer House Museum offers free bilingual tours in English and Mandarin. The Museum also presents public programs on science, poetry, social justice, and the arts. Seasonal Community Open House events, literature series, and garden sculpture exhibitions are popular features of our program as well as a rapidly-growing educational program that serves local schools and underprivileged youth with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math).
