He is also skilled at an array of endobrochial and endoscopic therapies, including stenting and laser therapy. The son of two physicians his father a radiologist, his mother a pediatrician Dr. Hyman has been interested in medicine his entire life. I always loved working with my hands and trying to figure things out, so medicine interested me from early on, he says. He was originally planning on becoming a cardiac surgeon until his father passed away from cancer. He passed during my residency and that was when I realized what I wanted to do. Thoracic surgery has combined that love of working with my hands with the desire to help patients and their loved ones through cancer. Despite the heavy nature of some of the diseases Dr. Hyman treats, if you ask any one of his patients what makes him special, they ll likely say his sense of humor. I can be serious when needed, but I always try to joke around and lighten the mood, he says. Patients appreciate that I can make them laugh in a difficult time. It helps make me approachable. Behind the scenes, Dr. Hyman participates in tumor board meetings with other physicians to examine each patient s case and discuss innovative treatments and techniques. And not only is he dedicated to his patients in the present, he s determined to influence the future of cardiothoracic surgery as well he is an assistant professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and a secretary at Long Island Jewish Medical Center Staff Society, an advocacy group for physicians at the medical center. I try to advocate for physicians as well as patients, he says.Dr. Hyman received his postgraduate medical training in both general and cardiothoracic surgery at New York University Medical Center, followed by a year of specialized fellowship training in advanced minimally invasive thoracic surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is a graduate of Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences and Cornell University Medical College.
