History

Rekha Nair (CEO of Kalakendra NY) started learning classical dance at the age of 5 under the guidance of Smt. Chandrika Kurup of Noopura Dance School, New York whose Guru was the Late Smt. Kalamandalam Kalyanikuttyamma. After setting a basic knowledge of dance through Bharathanatyam and Folk, she started learning Mohiniyattam at the age of 11 and Kuchipudi at the age of 19. Rekha has also learned Bharathanatyam under the well-known Dhananjayans at the yearly camp sessions held in Virginia. Also a guru to Rekha, Smt. Kalamandalam Sreedevi Mohan has trained her in Mohiniyattam which was a rewarding experience. Continuing her exploration in dance, she had the opportunity to learn the basics of Odissi under Smt. Mala Desai. Rekha has performed and choreographed dances for various occasions including national conventions across the US.
