Barneys New York Commissioned fashion retail architecture experts Jeffrey Hutchison & Associates (JHA ) to design a 91, 500 square foot emporium at the corner of Oak and Rush streets in the heart of Chicago's fashion district. Set to open its doors in April, 2009 JHA translated the urbane Barneys New York aesthetic for its new home replacing an existing 45, 000 square foot store across the street, which has been home to the brand since 1993."Chicago is a great fashion city and has been an excellent partner for Barneys over the years, " says Jeffrey Hutchison. "This building reflects the taste and luxury of Chicago, while staying true to the elegance that is synonymous with Barneys.""Jeffrey and JHA understand very well the Barneys sensibility, " says David New, Executive Vice President, Creative Services, Barneys New York. "They are the best at integrating architecture, art and merchandising into one package. I believe that JHA successfully amplified all the iconic Barneys elements in an appropriate way both for Barneys and Chicago."The new six-story building, designed in collaboration with Gensler Architects, is respectful of Chicago's great architectural heritage, evoking such iconic structures as Louis Sullivan's Carson Pirie Scott store. The classic design is enhanced through the use of Indiana limestone and bronze-framed windows. The corner of Oak and Rush streets is marked by a 5-story curved glass "curtain wall, " which unveils the dramatic, decorative 3-level staircase, drawing customers inside. This newest Barneys New York outpost features seven floors of the Barneys trademark mix of pulse=quickening merchandise, each level conveying a distinct feel and experience that coordinates with the wares.
